Throughout Alexander’s childhood, he observed the great victories of his father Philip throughout the Balkans, establishing Macedonia as a nation of great military strength.
Alexander was only one of many descendants of Philip II that could have become his successor. Alexander, son of Philip II and a princess from Epirus, one of Philip’s many wives, was born in Pella, the ancient capital city of Macedonia in July 356 BC (, 2013).
